The Health Effects of Poor Sleep Habits

What if all your efforts to be healthy were for nothing?

Well if you don’t have a healthy sleep routine, there is little you can do to make up for it. In our fast-paced world, functioning on poor sleep has become a badge of honor, but it shouldn’t be something you’re proud of.

Late nights, sleeping in, or simply not getting enough quality sleep each night can put you at risk for serious health issues.

Most people don't know the real cost of poor sleep habits; but once you read this article, sleep will quickly become your #1 health priority.

Poor Sleep Habits Can:

#1.  Dumb You Down

Poor sleep habits impair your attention, alertness, concentration, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.

This can make it more difficult to learn and also lowers your productivity both at work and at home.

#2. Impair Judgement

Poor sleep habits can hurt your ability to accurately assess situations and make sound judgments. This can make simple tasks like driving extremely dangerous.

#3 Put You At Risk For:

❧ Heart Disease
❧ High Blood Pressure
❧ Strokes
❧ Diabetes
❧ Obesity
❧ Death

#4 Worsen Depression

Poor sleep habits can contribute to symptoms of depression such as sadness, lack of motivation and lack of energy.

These symptoms can make it harder to establish a healthy sleep routine and in turn, create a cycle that is difficult to break.

#5 Kill Your Sex Drive

Sleep deprived men and women report lower libidos and less interest in sex. That says it all.

#6. Make You Gain Weight

If you don’t snooze, you can’t lose those extra pounds!

Lack of sleep not only increases your hunger and appetite, but it also increases cravings for unhealthy processed foods that are high in fat and carbohydrates.

#7. Age Your Skin

Poor sleep habits can lead to premature wrinkles, lines and dark circles under the eyes. When you don’t get enough sleep your body releases more cortisol, which breaks down the collagen that keeps your skin smooth and elastic.

While life can throw curve balls that require a late night here and there, it is important to weigh the risks and make sure it’s not becoming a habit.

A healthy sleep routine is necessary for optimal functioning and critical to the prevention of chronic conditions.

Now that you know the risks, next time you pull an “all-nighter” ask yourself, is it really worth it?
